Case Study - Testing Ice Cream Ingredients and Packaging

Instron food testing systems provide the flexibility to do compression, puncture, tension, and many other tests on ingredients The Challenge

A major ice cream supplier required a testing system for performing texture tests on their products and ingredients. Nuts, cookies, cherries, etc. were to be tested for quality prior to formulation and the final product was to be tested too. They also needed to measure failure properties of the various containers, wrappers and other packaging used for ice cream products.

Testing systems were needed that could provide the performance and flexibility needed in the R&D laboratory and satisfy the need for ease of use in the QC departments. This would allow the test methods developed by R&D to be used in the production plant QC labs.

The Solution

  • The Model 5542 with Merlin™ Software was selected to meet the ice cream supplier's needs.
  • Several specialized fixtures to test packaging containers were also designed and produced by Instron.
  • Complete automation of the Texture Profile Analysis (TPA) test with Merlin™ Software.
  • Flexibility to do compression, puncture, tension, and many other tests on ingredients.

System Characteristics

  • Single column load frame with test control panel
  • 500 kg load cell (cells as small as 500 g available)
  • Merlin™ Software with TPA test methods
  • Personal computer
  • Food testing fixtures
  • Packaging test fixtures
