Puncture Test Method
A Puncture Test also known as Puncture Resistance Test, provides data on How Your Product or Material can Withstand Penetrating Force and Energy
How to perform a Puncture Test
The Puncture Test method is described in the drop weight impact testing standard ISO 6603 and ASTM D3763 standards
A drop weight impact testing machine performs the impact of a guided striker perpendicular and centered on the specimen. The tup or striker insert has a hemispherical striking insert with a suitable diameter (e.a. 20 mm) and tup holder can be equipped with additional weights. Round or square specimens, clamped in a pneumatically activated clamping ring with a suitable diameter (e.a. 40 mm), are used.
The puncture test method is a multiaxial impact test to evaluate the so called puncture energy. Depending on the material and on the test procedure, the sample will display damage, such as penetration, initial cracks, breaks and failure breaks. When testing sheets, films or welded pipes, the electronic recording of the relationship between force and deformation using an instrumented tup can significantly enhance the data acquisition.

To minimize the adverse effects of friction that occurs between the tup insert and the specimen, ISO 6603-2 recommends using a lubricant on the tip of the insert. The 9450 drop weight impact testing machine can be equipped with an automatic lubrication device that guarantees automated and repeatable oil application.
A puncture test can be conducted under the standard laboratory atmosphere or at low or high temperatures with a thermostatic chamber that hosts the support fixture and the specimens. By changing the conditioning and temperature and testing in a controlled manner at any given impact velocity, the transitions from a ductile to brittle failure mode can be determined for most plastics. Instron 9440 and 9450 drop weight impact testing machines can be equipped with optional thermostatic chambers to allow puncture impact tests below and above 0°.

How to Increase Productivity When Performing a Puncture Test
Maintaining high productivity can be challenging when performing large volumes of puncture impact tests. Instron impact tester 9450 is equipped with either a manual pivoting specimen feeding system or an automatic specimen feeding system. Both devices increase productivity while decreasing repetitive operator actions associated with manual testing.
