TORSION ADD-ON 3.0

Convert an Axial-Only Testing Machine Into a Biaxial Testing System

The recently redesigned Torsion Add-On 3.0 performs simultaneous axial and torsional loading on components and materials on any 6800 or 5900 Series table model system, allowing you to expand product development capabilities and simulate real-world applications of your products. Completely integrated with Bluehill Universal software, the Torsion Add-On 3.0 offers a simple solution for characterizing the performance of medical devices, electronics, consumer products, packaging, and automotive components that require both axial and torsional testing – and can meet various international testing standards, including ISO 11040-4, ISO 80369, ASTM F543, and more.

CAPABILITIES

Torsion Add-On on 6800 Series Single Column Universal Testing System

Simulate Real-World Use of Your Product

Functional testing is all about simulating real-world use of your product. Many consumer products, especially packaging for pharmaceuticals, food, makeup, etc. are subjected to simple multi-axis loading. Ensuring the consistent quality of the end user experience is vital for long-term product growth and success.

Speed-Up Product Development

When developing new products in the medical device and electronics industries, ensuring product durability under biaxial loading is crucial. Many companies isolate axial-only and torsional-only testing. However, by combining both tests, laboratories can decrease total test time and speed up the product development process.

Free-Up Lab Benchtop Space

Benchtop space is valuable real estate for many labs – and those that perform axial-only and torsional-only tests on separate machines can free up space by adding torsion capabilities to their traditionally axial-only machine. This add-on is compatible with single column and dual column table models.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Luer Lock Connections

Luer connections are universally used on medical devices to ensure secure leak-free connections and as such require rigorous testing. ISO 80369 outlines the procedures to properly test the functionality of these devices and requires biaxial testing to characterize the Luer connection. The Torsion Add-on is ideal for performing these tests and can meet all the requirements laid out in the testing annexes.

Glass Syringes

Pre-filled glass syringes are most commonly tested to ISO 11040-4 standards. As glass syringes are more susceptible to failure than plastic syringes, a wider variety of tests are required to be performed on them. ISO 11040 provides 10 mechanical tests, including torque, required to fully characterize the syringe. An axial system with the Torsion Add-on can meet the full requirements of the standard.

Pen Injector

Pen injectors are commonly used for drug management for patients with chronic diseases. These devices allow patients to administer their own medication in a simple and consistent manner. It is critical that these devices work as intended, providing an accurate dose the patient can easily administer themselves. The Torsion Add-On provides the ability to characterize cap removal, push-button activation and dial dose forces on one test system.

Medical and Consumer Packaging

Packaging creates the first impression a product makes on an end user. Being able to accurately characterize and test packaging is extremely important to ensure consistency in package secureness and ease of opening. Many packages require simultaneous axial and torsional forces to properly test, including pharmaceutical bottles tested in accordance to ASTM D7860. The Torsion Add-On can provide more realistic testing in the development of high-quality packaging.

Bone Screws

Bone screws are used in surgical procedures for securing implants, osteosynthesis devices or fracture fixation plates to the skeletal system. In normal clinical use, a surgeon applies combined axial and torsional forces to the bone screw as they are implanted within the body. The Torsion Add-On is capable of testing bone screws in accordance with ASTM F543 to determine mechanical properties and evaluate new designs and materials.

Tubing, Cables and Wires for Medical and Electronics Applications

Medical tubing is used in a variety of applications and procedures. Navigating through a complex maze of arterial cavities, tubing and guidewires will experience both axial and torsional forces as they are pressed against the arterial wall. The Torsion Add-On can be used to evaluate the biaxial properties of these products to prevent failures during a procedure and potential harm to a patient.

Electronics cables and wires are subjected to twisting as they are snaked through and around various components. The Torsion Add-On can help in the development of more durable components with greater longevity.

Flexible Electronics

Flexible displays and circuit boards are utilized in an increasing number of products, and as their demand grows, so does the need for testing. Performing biaxial tests helps manufacturers ensure the circuitry inside their products is robust and can withstand long-term use. The Torsion Add-On provides operators the ability to develop biaxial testing procedures to evaluate the durability of flexible displays and circuit boards quickly.

Buttons and Switches

Many products utilize buttons and switches in their design, which must go through intensive development. Mechanical testing can be used to characterize the tactical feedback of switches and buttons to optimize the user experience. The Torsion Add-On can easily be programmed to perform these tests, mimicking real world conditions.
