Precision Specimen Loader for Thin Films and Foils

The precision specimen loader improves alignment and the setup process for testing thin films and foils, resulting in reduced variation in test results and improved safety and ergonomics. Available for our 250 N pneumatic side action tensile grips (catalog no. 2712-052), this device uses a detachable alignment clip and linear rail to guide the specimens into the grips. The precision specimen loader is available in multiple sizes to accommodate a wide range of specimen dimensions. Thin films and foils play an important role in battery applications.

AT3 Automated Testing System: Configured for Thin Film Testing

The Instron® AT3 Automated Testing System uses an innovative and adaptable design for testing materials such as rigid plastics, elastomers, rubber, thin film, foam, and metals. In this video, the AT3 is testing separator film for electric vehicle batteries. Normal tensile testing of films can prove challenging, but the versatile AT3 makes it easy, improving repeatability, safety, and efficiency by automating everything from measurement to specimen handling and removal. With a smaller footprint than the AT6 robotic system, the AT3 provides a simple and compact solution while still maintaining high throughput and accuracy.

ASTM D1894 and ISO 8295: Coefficient of Friction on Plastic Film

ASTM D1894 and ISO 8295 are standardized test methods used for determining static (μ_s) and kinetic (μ_k) coefficients of friction of plastic film and sheeting. In order to ensure that plastic films perform as expected, the frictional properties of these films must be characterized and controlled.

Puncture Test Fixture: Testing Separator Film for Electric Vehicle Batteries

Puncture testing (EN 14477) of separator film is critical to ensure the safety and longevity of each cell throughout the life cycle of a battery. Film must be strong enough to withstand punctures from dendrites that form with extensive use. Ensuring proper specimen tautness and alignment of an upper probe are critical for this application.
