Charpy Impact Testing: Minimizing Hammer Changes

A common misconception within metals Charpy testing is that the specimen being tested must have an impact energy between 10% and 80% of the hammer capacity to be a standard compliant test. This is not true for metals tested to current common international standards such as ISO 148 and ASTM E23. This misconception sometimes comes from confusion with plastics standards (see ISO 179-1), other older metals standards (see GOST 9454-78), and historical use of a low resolution dial indicator on metals pendulum systems. Due to these misunderstandings, labs often have multiple systems or hammers for testing a range of specimen energies.

Protect Your Investment: The Instron BioCoat

Do you perform mechanical testing with an Instron BioPuls Bath, a homemade bath, or with wet specimens? Medical devices and biomaterials are often tested in a bath of water or saline heated to 37 °C (body temperature) to replicate a more physiologically accurate environment. While this creates an accurate simulation, using liquid can pose a risk of damaging your Instron system, since many of the frame’s electronics are housed directly under the liquid-filled test space. More often than not, the risk usually comes from filling and emptying the bath.

What is 21 CFR Part 11 and How Does it Affect Me?

Have you heard of 21 CFR Part 11? If not, it is a set of compliance requirements that allow for safe and secure storage and submission of electronic records for industries regulated by the US FDA. In other words, this is the FDAs procedure for quality control of electronic data. Any company storing electronic data that could be audited by the FDA must comply with this set of requirements. Although the FDA still permits paper-based data storage and submission, this approach can lead to higher costs, increased time to market, decreased quality, and challenges with information storage availability, retrieval and portability, as compared with electronic methods.
