ASTM D3822 섬유 단사의 인장 특성
아주 섬세한 섬유를 가지고 작업하는 경우 가장 적합한 시험 조건을 찾기가 쉽지 않습니다. 시편을 쉽게 장착하고 제거할 수 있는 편리한 그립을 선택하는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 때로는 시편의 양 끝단에 테이프로 탭을 만들어 잡아주는 것이 시편을 쉽게 설치할 수 있는 방법이 되기도 합니다. 특히 시편이 너무 가늘어 육안으로 보기 힘들 정도라면 더욱 그렇습니다. 적절한 그립을 사용하면 시편의 미끄러짐이나 그립 내부 파단이 일어나지 않습니다.
단사는 대개 매우 섬약해서 아주 낮은 하중에서도 파단이 일어납니다. 적절한 로드셀(load cell)을 사용함으로써 필요한 최대의 정밀도를 구현하실 수 있습니다. 우리 연구실에서 진행한 시험의 경우 특정 샘플은 평균 0.3 N의 하중에서 파단이 일어나는 재료도 있었습니다. 이 경우 5500 series testing system을 사용하기 때문에 5 N 용량의 로드셀을 사용할 수 있습니다. 5500 Series testing system으로는 로드셀 용량의 1/250 에 이르기까지 읽는값의 +/ 0.5 %까지 정밀도를 보장합니다. 어떤 단사에는 더 큰 용량의 로드셀이 필요할 수도 있습니다.
섬유 단사에 적합한 그립에도 다양한 종류가 있습니다. 시편의 길이가 충분하면 cord and yarn style grips을 추천하며 이 그립은 곡선을 따라 시편을 감기듯이 장착함으로써 시편의 조기 파단 가능성을 줄여 줍니다. 또한 시편의 수직 정렬에도 도움이 됩니다. 위에 언급한 연구에서는 단사의 길이가 너무 짧아서 공압식 그립인 5 N side pneumatic side acting grips을 사용하였습니다. 사용하는 그립의 무게가 로드셀 용량의 ½ 을 넘어서는 안됩니다. 로드셀 용량의 ½ 을 초과하면 사용할 수 있는 로드셀의 하중 범위가 줄어들게 됩니다.

2714 Series Pneumatic Tire Cord Grips (2714-040)
Pneumatic cord and yarn grips are designed to have interchangeable clamping blocks that accommodate fiber or yarns made from conventional fibers to newly developed high-performance fibers. A specially designed horn with a smooth, highly-polished or controlled surface roughness finish and a contoured surface with a graduated cam allows for easy loading and a stress-reduced clamping area on the specimen. The clamping mechanism can be activated either automatically or through a footswitch to allow hands-free grip operation; this enables the operator to hold the specimen with both hands for easy loading. Pneumatic cord and yarn grips provide selectable clamping force to accommodate different materials and excellent follow-up action that compensates for decay of the holding force due to specimen creep.
