Instron’s transverse clip-on extensometers are designed for measurement of transverse strain on anisotropic materials that will allow for the calculations of Poisson’s ratio for plastics and composites testing, along with r & n values for testing sheet metals.

Transverse Extensometer

Transverse / Diametral Strain Gauge Extensometers
W-E404 Series

The W-E404 Series transverse extensometers are self-supporting on the test specimen and will work on any width or diameter specimen between 0 and 25 mm (1 in). They are commonly used to measure Poisson's ratio and transverse strain on anisotropic materials such as composites. They are usually used simultaneously with axial extensometers. An integrated integral spring allows the extensometer to easily clip onto the specimen and maintain its position. The rounded contact edges help maintain the position on the specimen.

Transverse Averaging Extensometer

Transverse Averaging Extensometer
Catalog Number 2640-010

The 2640 Series averaging transverse extensometer is designed to measure average transverse gauge length and strain with a single output channel. It is suitable for use in r & n testing on sheet metals with an appropriate axial extensometer of 50 mm (2 in) gauge length minimum. The averaging transverse extensometer consists of two extensometers of ±5 mm (±0.2 in) travel, which are fixed together at a 25 mm (1 in) gauge length. Specimen displacement is measured at two points using two individual high-accuracy, dual-flexure strain-gauge sensors. The output of each sensor is averaged to produce a single averaged output.

Specimen Sizes
Gauge Width 10 – 25 mm (0.4 – 1 in)
Thickness 0.3 – 6 mm (0.12 – 0.236 in)
Contraction Up to 10 mm (0.4 in)
