Overview

The Instron® 2810-005 Coefficient of Friction Fixture measures the static and kinetic coefficient of friction of plastic film and sheet, in accordance with ASTM D1894 and ISO 8295. A weighted sled is pulled across a fixed horizontal table while a load cell records the force required — giving you accurate, repeatable friction data your quality and R&D teams can trust.

The fixture mounts directly into your universal testing system using Instron's standard Type D base grip adapter, so you can add coefficient of friction testing to an existing frame without buying dedicated equipment.

Benefits

  • Test your way — Mount the specimen to the sled, the table, or both, so you can match the fixture setup to your exact material and test requirements.
  • Start testing right away — Comes with both a nylon and a metal tow line included, so you're ready to test without sourcing additional parts.
  • Use the equipment you already have — Adaptable to most standard universal testing instruments, protecting your existing investment in test equipment.

Applications

  • Plastic film and sheeting friction testing for quality control, incoming material inspection, and R&D
  • Tensile-mode coefficient of friction testing (not intended for high-rate/high-speed applications)

How It Works

A tow line connects the sled to a low-force load cell, running over a guide pulley. As the crosshead moves, the sled is pulled across the table and the load cell records force throughout the test:

  • Static coefficient of friction is calculated from the first force peak on the load curve
  • Kinetic coefficient of friction is calculated from the average force between two defined points
  • Coefficient of friction = recorded force ÷ sled mass
