Instron Launches Labtronic EVO — a Modular Controller Platform for Servohydraulic Testing Systems
Instron® is delighted to introduce the new Labtronic EVO® product family, a modular and scalable controller platform designed for modern servohydraulic applications and advanced testing systems. Built on a decentralized architecture, Labtronic EVO replaces traditional centralized control concepts with a flexible ecosystem that reduces cabling, improves signal quality, and simplifies installation, commissioning, and future system upgrades.
Until now, many laboratories relied on centralized controller architectures that often required extensive wiring, lengthy installation processes, and complex retrofits when expanding test capabilities. With Labtronic EVO, electronics are placed closer to actuators and sensors, significantly shortening analog signal paths and streamlining system architecture. This decentralized approach can reduce test setup and conversion time by up to 80% in certain configurations, helping laboratories maximize uptime and testing efficiency.
Because scalability and modernization are increasingly important for today's test facilities, Labtronic EVO was designed to support new installations as well as upgrades of existing systems. Backward compatibility with Labtronic® 8800ml platforms allows users to implement stepwise upgrades and hybrid configurations, protecting existing investments while enabling a smooth transition to the latest control technology.
The Labtronic EVO platform consists of five integrated components that work together to create a seamless testing ecosystem.
- Labtronic EVO CORE serves as the real-time controller with high-speed EtherCAT communication according to IEC 61158.
- Labtronic EVO MAIN provides robust housing protection against dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations.
- Labtronic EVO 24-10 / 24-20 deliver decentralized 24 V power distribution and I/O expansion.
- Labtronic EVO LINK brings measurement amplification, valve control, and CAN/CAN FD bus functionality directly to the actuator level.
- Labtronic EVO SAFE provides a standardized safety solution compliant with ISO 13849-1/2 Performance Level d requirements.
Among its key advantages, Labtronic EVO enables deterministic real-time control through 10 kHz loop update rates supported by EtherCAT technology, ensuring fast and reliable data exchange across complex testing environments.
The integrated EVO LINK modules combine sensor measurement, valve control, and CAN interfaces (CAN 2.0 A/B and CAN FD) into a single compact unit mounted directly on or near the actuator. This design not only improves signal quality but also simplifies installation through hybrid cabling and daisy-chain connectivity supporting up to eight EVO LINK modules.
New and existing test laboratories can benefit from the platform's future-proof architecture. Stepwise upgrade capabilities allow facilities to modernize at their own pace without replacing entire test systems. Because Labtronic EVO remains compatible with existing Labtronic 8800ml hardware and familiar RSLabSite® software environments, users can significantly reduce training requirements and accelerate adoption while maintaining operational continuity.
“Labtronic EVO was developed to help laboratories reduce complexity while creating a scalable foundation for future growth,” said Burkhard Bertemes, Instron’s Innovation Manager. “Whether customers are installing a new servohydraulic test system or modernizing existing equipment, the platform allows them to simplify wiring, reduce downtime, and expand capabilities without disrupting established workflows.”
The new Labtronic EVO product family is ideal for durability, fatigue, performance, and general-purpose servohydraulic testing applications where flexibility, reliability, and efficient system management are critical. With decentralized electronics, advanced safety functionality, EtherCAT connectivity, and seamless backward compatibility, Labtronic EVO delivers a modern controller platform that helps laboratories improve productivity today while preparing for tomorrow's testing requirements.
