Introduction to Static Materials Testing

This one-day introductory course is designed for new operators and anyone building a foundation in materials testing. Students learn the fundamentals of static testing — including mechanical properties, stress and strain, test curves, modulus, and yield — with live demonstrations of tensile, compressive, flexural, and peel tests on Instron testing systems.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Define key materials testing terminology, theory, and concepts
  • Identify and interpret common force/displacement test curves and distinguish between different curve types
  • Apply correct testing procedures for tensile, compression, flexure, and peel tests — including common mistakes to avoid
  • Operate a computerized materials testing system to perform tensile, compression, flexural, and peel tests safely and accurately
  • Explain the importance of system calibration and its impact on data accuracy
  • Describe specimen geometry requirements and understand how specimen dimensions affect test results
  • Calculate stress, strain, elongation, modulus, offset yield, and other advanced results
  • Label and interpret major points and results on a test curve
  • Identify different types of strain measurement devices and understand when each is appropriate
