Multi-Axis Shaking Table (MAST) Systems
Multi-Axis Shaking Table (MAST) systems are designed for vibration testing of a wide range of test specimens. Vibration input can be generated in up to six degrees of freedom (6-DOF), either individually or simultaneously: three translational axes (vertical, lateral, and longitudinal) and three rotational axes (roll, pitch, and yaw).
In the real world, components rarely experience vibration along a single axis. A seat in a moving vehicle, for example, is shaken up and down, side to side, and forward and back, while also rocking and twisting, all at the same time. By reproducing this combined motion in the laboratory, MAST systems let you evaluate how a specimen will perform in service far more realistically than single-axis testing, and identify weaknesses earlier in the development process.
MAST systems can be used for a variety of durability, performance, and squeak and rattle applications. Squeak and rattle testing is especially important in automotive development, where even minor noises inside the passenger compartment can shape a customer's perception of vehicle quality. MAST systems help engineers locate and eliminate these noise sources before production.
Variations of MAST systems are also available for earthquake simulation with heavy payloads, allowing structural components and equipment to be tested under realistic seismic loading.
Typical Applications
- Durability testing of vehicle components and assemblies, such as seats, instrument panels, and fuel tanks
- Squeak and rattle testing of interior modules and trim
- Vibration testing of electronics and battery modules
- Performance evaluation under combined multi-axis loading
- Earthquake simulation for structural components and equipment with heavy payloads
