Axle Test System
Developing and validating vehicle axle components requires a thorough understanding of the loads and stresses they experience throughout their service life. As vehicle technologies evolve and performance demands increase, the ability to reproduce realistic axle loads in a controlled laboratory environment — as early as possible in the development process — is essential for establishing lifetime verification and achieving production release.
Instron's Axle Test System brings the road directly into the laboratory. By reproducing the full spectrum of loads that axle elements experience during real-world vehicle operation, the system enables accelerated fatigue and durability testing of axle components and assemblies under representative conditions — reducing reliance on expensive and time-consuming proving ground testing.
What the System Reproduces
The Instron Axle Test System is capable of introducing the following loads and conditions into the test axle:
- Stresses experienced by the axle during normal vehicle operation
- Drive torque and braking torque introduced to the axle
- Steering displacement and torque
- Longitudinal forces and lateral forces encountered during cornering maneuvers
- Vertical loads resulting from rough road surfaces
- Braking, steering, and camber moments
- Optional corrosive and environmental effects for combined mechanical and environmental durability evaluation
- System Capability
Axle test rigs are used to reproduce in the laboratory the different loads applied to axle elements as a vehicle travels over a variety of road surfaces. The test rig introduces all six degrees of freedom (6 DOF) of loading into the axle — providing the most complete representation of real-world axle loading available in a laboratory environment.
Instron provides axle test systems for car, van, truck, and bus axles, with configurations tailored to the specific load ranges, axle geometries, and test objectives of each application.

RS LabSite® modulogic is a modular software suite designed for structural durability testing and virtual prototyping. It supports open and closed-loop control of durability tests, real-time data collection, and service load simulation for individual components or complete vehicles.
The package consists of four modules:
- RS BasTest RT — digital pre-processing of test signals
- RS Analysis — single and multi-axial load simulation
- RS TWR — specific analysis procedures for durability evaluation
- RS Monitoring — multi-stage test reporting and documentation
All modules run under Windows and can be configured to suit the specific requirements of your testing program.
